Eyes the color of thick smoke, the woman peered out from beneath her cowl at the roiling stormclouds that blocked the sun, sending the waves into a frenzy. Her pale skin seemed to grow still paler. Suddenly a gust of wind whipped back the hood, black hair streaming out on the wind and whipping the cloak back from a youthful body dressed in supple leathers. Legs outspread, arms crossed, her eyes seemed to grow still darker as she watched the impending storm from the deck.
"El Capitan!" The crusty first mate shouted to be heard above the raging wind.
She turned, stony face impassive. One eyebrow rose, a command the man had long since learned to obey, and quickly.
"There is a sound within 15 knots of here. Should I give the order?"
Her lips thinned dangerously. "We're riding this one out, Enrique. The nobility detests being detained for overly long, as I'm sure you know..." She drew out the last word, daring him to contradict her.
"Of course, m'lady."
"Trim the sails. No one comes on deck without a lifeline. And make sure the helmsman is relieved before schedule."
The first mate hurried off, shouting at the top of his lungs to be heard above the storm. She turned back to her silent vigil, even as the sheets of rain began to slant down from the heavens above. Everyone upon her vessel would be in for a long night. The glower upon her full lips would have alerted any of her crew to the state of mind she was in. Orders were orders; she didn't have to agree with them.
